Ruth also features in the letters. On 13 August he sent her a big ‘X’ ‘for writing me such a nice letter and drawings’ and on 21 August he was sad that such ‘a little mite’ might have to have her tonsils out. He shares Sylvia’s worries about whether this is the right thing to do but says that it has to be Sylvia’s decision, and hers alone. Sylvia, being in Frome, brought him news of the wider family. His niece, Gloria, was busy sketching and he looked forward to seeing these pictures and notes his reaction (07.09.44) to an example of her literary work:
